Imagine a small neighborhood school serving youth and the community through an excellent and innovative learning environment. This vision for Catalyst Charter School started by imagining, dialoguing and strategizing with Bellflower community members. Kingdom Causes an organization who’s mission is to inspire, connect and mobilize people for individual and community transformation was a catalyst to this cause. Through relationships and community connections with Kingdom Causes an education task force started in January 2009 to begin talking about education in Bellflower. Some taksforce members volunteer in afterschool educational programs for Bellflower students and others serve in the local schools. This commitment to students’ education achievement led to conversations about different educational choices in our district. The result was a dream coming to fruition, a new nonprofit and the Catalyst Charter School proposal.
Values:
Integrity: Moral values are foundational to the school and to the development of the students’ character and life.
Excellence: Our standard is excellence in all aspects of the students’ academic and social experience. The school’s structure of accountability ensures quality and conveys the expectation that learning requires dedication.
Creativity: A spirit of innovation and creativity inspires students learning and fosters skill sets beyond academics.
Diversity: Embracing the community, the school reflects Bellflower’s cultural and ethnic diversity.
Partnership: Collaboration is valued between students, parents, teachers, administration and the broader community.
Personal: Relationships create a respectful and safe space and are developed through a small class room size and open communication.
Investment: Commitment is a key contributor to the success of students; significant investments of time and talent will be made by staff, students, families and community partners.

I am very much interested in your movement to begin a charter school in Bellflower. I was in attendance at the April BUSD board meeting, and was impressed with the ideals and goals you were proposing for your school. I have lived in Bellflower for the past 22 years, am married and have 3 children, 2 of which have graduated from BHS. I have served on the PTA, School site council at Woodruff Elementary, and the Citizen’s Taskforce and am a member of Calvary Baptisit Church here in Bellflower. I am also a recent victim of the reduction in force for teachers at BUSD. I am an elementary school teacher with 10 years of experience. I have a real heart for this community. I am interested in more information as to how I might be able to assist your cause. Thank you.
